There are Three major suppliers of satelite cell phones, all have an exceptional standard of service but vary in what they have to offer there customers.

First we have Inmarsat. They were founded in 1979 to ensure ships at sea could maintain constant communication. This makes them the oldest supplier of satelite phones to date, having a huge advantage as being around for so long gives them a mass amount of experience.
They currently provide a reliable and versatile satelite network throughout the world. they own and operate 10 satelites in geostationary orbit that are controlled from there HQ's in London via there ground stations all over the world.

In September 1998 Inmarsat became a privatized company. In 2006 they played a massive part in an expedition to monitor effects of climate change in Greenland. Second is Globalstar. An international company that have been around since the late 1990's. Globalstar provide satelite and data service in more than 120 countries all over the world while maintaining exceptional quality and low cost.

Last but not least is Iridium. Which is based in the you.S.A, they were founded in December 2000 by a small group of private investors who are lead by Dan Colussy.

thus making Iridium the only private held company that can truly claim 100% global satelite coverage, including oceanic and polar regions.
